Chapter 25

They’d spent Sunday alone in Max’s house as if they were hiding from the world. When she’d called Ryan to check on their mother, he’d hung up on her after telling her to take a day off. At first it had pissed her off, but when Max folded his arms around her and held her against him on the couch, she understood that she needed the peaceful moment. Oh, she knew in time she’d owe Ryan big, but for the day, she’d accept his generosity.

It was quiet Monday morning, and Meghann pulled the comforter up closer to her face to block out the light that was in her eyes.

Once she had fallen asleep, she slept soundly. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d done that. After a few more comfortable minutes, she rolled over to find Max gone, but the scent of his cologne lingered in the air.

Meghann forced herself to sit up and look at her phone, which had died some time during the night. Guilt pained her heart, what if her brother had needed her?

She ran her fingers through her hair and logically thought it out. He knew where she was if he needed her.

Kicking her legs over the side of the bed, Meghann fumbled to her feet, and found the shirt Max had taken off of her. She shrugged it back on, pulled on her panties, and went to find him.

As she walked down the hallway, the scent changed to fresh brewed coffee. When she turned to the kitchen, she saw the light on the coffee maker still on and a note. The clock above the microwave read six-forty-five.

My mornings start early. But you are welcome to stay as long as you like. I’ll meet up with you later. Love, Max

P.S. I left you a key to my house on the dresser. Keep it.

Meghann pressed the handwritten note to her chest. How silly was it that it made her giddy inside to know he wrote her a little note?

She felt bad that he got ready so quietly while she slept, but he probably knew just how much she needed her rest.

Meghann poured herself a cup of coffee and walked back to the bedroom. The key was right where he’d promised it would be. Keep it, the note had said.

Gripping it in her hand, she let out a sigh. She had a lot to do today, to change the course of her life.

It was almost seven o’clock, and she’d be taking advantage of her brother if she didn’t go straight home, but she knew Paige had a yoga class at seven-thirty. Wouldn’t that be the perfect start to a new day?

Meghann looked at the key in her hand. The perfect start to a new life.
